PRODUCT TRANSPARENCY & METHODOLOGY
Every calculator on Real BMI is built directly on published mathematical equations, public health reference data, and transparent algorithms.
Real BMI is an independent web application created and maintained by Bhawanshi Dosi. Rather than relying on generic black-box scripts, every tool on this site is documented below with its exact formula, source authority, input parameters, and inherent measurement limitations.
All calculations use established peer-reviewed literature and published equations (Mifflin-St Jeor, Boer, Devine, US Navy Logarithmic).
Outputs are evaluated against official population benchmarks from the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
Calculator inputs are computed instantly in your browser JavaScript environment — no health metrics are stored on external databases.
Every calculator explicitly states what it measures and what it cannot measure, avoiding misleading clinical claims.
Systematic Reference Matrix
Review the equations, data sources, inputs, outputs, and measurement boundaries for each calculator tool.
Metric: kg / m² | Imperial: (lbs / inches²) × 703
WHO Technical Report Series 854 / CDC Adult BMI Standard
Height, Weight
Body Mass Index score & WHO Category
Measures total mass relative to height; does not distinguish muscle mass from adipose fat tissue.
kg / m² with WHO Western Pacific Ethnic Thresholds
WHO Western Pacific Region & IOTF Consultation (2000)
Height, Weight, Asian Ethnic Ancestry
Regional Asian BMI Classification (Cutoff at 23.0 kg/m²)
Applies to Asian populations due to higher visceral fat ratio at lower BMI levels; screening tool only.
Mifflin-St Jeor: 10W + 6.25H - 5A + S (+5 male / -161 female)
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Mifflin MD et al., 1990)
Age, Sex, Height, Weight
Resting Energy Expenditure (kcal/day)
Estimates resting metabolic rate; does not account for thyroid variance or extreme muscle mass variations.
BMR × Activity Multiplier (1.2 to 1.9 PAL Factors)
FAO/WHO/UNU Human Energy Requirements Expert Consultation
BMR, Physical Activity Level (PAL)
Total Daily Energy Expenditure (kcal/day)
Relies on self-reported activity categories; actual daily thermogenesis fluctuates based on NEAT.
Devine / Hamwi / Miller / Robinson Heights Equations
Standard Clinical Pharmacotherapy Formulas (Devine BJ, 1974)
Height, Sex
Reference Weight Bracket (kg / lbs)
Provides historical clinical dosing baselines; does not represent individual body composition targets.
US Navy Logarithmic Circumference Equations
Naval Health Research Center (Hodgdon & Beckett, 1984)
Height, Neck, Waist, Hip (women)
Estimated Body Fat Percentage (%) & Category
Estimates body volume based on circumference; less precise than DEXA or hydrostatic weighing.
Boer Equation (Men: 0.407W + 0.267H - 19.2 | Women: 0.252W + 0.473H - 48.3)
Boer P. (1984) Estimated Lean Body Mass Equations
Height, Weight, Sex
Estimated Fat-Free Mass (kg / lbs)
Mathematical approximation based on total mass and height; does not measure organ vs muscle breakdown.
Energy Difference Scenarios = TDEE - Selected Deficit
NIH / NIDDK Guidelines & Energy Balance Models
BMR, TDEE, Example Energy Difference
Daily Calorie Reference Baseline (kcal/day)
Mathematical energy differential model for planning reference; not a prescriptive medical weight loss plan.
Body Weight (kg) × Activity Multiplier (0.8g/kg RDA to 2.2g/kg ISSN)
International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN Position Stand)
Body Weight, Activity Level, Fitness Focus
Daily Protein Intake Reference Range (grams/day)
Provides educational reference ranges based on activity benchmarks; renal health considerations apply.
Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges (AMDR)
Institute of Medicine (IOM) Dietary Reference Intakes
Daily Calorie Intake, Goal Macro Split
Carbohydrate, Protein, Fat Distribution (grams)
General nutritional planning framework; individual dietary needs vary based on metabolic conditions.
